Mata dan Penglihatan

Mata adalah indera penglihatan. Mata dibentuk untuk menerima rangsangan berkas –berkas cahaya pada retina. Oleh karena itu bayangan yang dibentuk di retina akan diteruskan pada otak untuk ditafsirkan.
Umumnya mata dilukiskan sebagai bola, tetapai sebetulnya lonjong dan bukan bolat seperti bola. Bola mata mempunyai garis menengah kira-kira 21/2 cm, bagian depannya bening, serta terdiri sari tiga lapisan :
Lapisan luar ( fibrus ) merupakan lapisan penyangga
Lapisan tengah (vaskuler )
Lapisan dalam / lapisan saraf
Di dalam mata terdapat otot penggerak mata diantaranya otot superior, inferior, medial, dan lateral. Otot – otot ini menggerakan mata ke atas, ke bawah, ke dalam, dan ke sisi luar bergantian.
Skelera merupakan pembungkus yang kuat dan fibrus. Skelera membentuk putih mata dan bersambung pada bagian depan dengan sebuah jendela membran yang bening yaitu kornea. Skelera melindungi stuktur mata yang sangat halus, serta membantu mempertahankan bentuk biji mata.

Bagian – bagian mata :
Retina : lapisan saraf pada mata yang terdiri dari sejumlah lapisan serabut, yaitu sel –sel saraf, batang – batang, dan kerucut. Pada retina terdapat bintik buta. Bagian yang paling peka terdapat retina adalah makula.
Kornea : merupakan bagian depan yang transparan dan bersambung dengan sklera.
Bilik anterior : terletak antara kornea dan iris.
Iris : tirai berwarna di depan lensa yang bersambung dengan selaput khoroid.
Pupil : bintik tengah yang berwarna hitam yang berwarna hitam yang merupakan celah dalam iris.
Bilik posterior : terletak di antara iris dan lensa.
Lensa : benda transparan yang terdiri dari beberapa lapisan. Lensa dapat mencembung dan memipih. Kemampuan lensa untuk mencembung dan memipih disebut daya akomodasi.


Penyakit Pada Mata :
Hipermetropi : rabun jauh, bayangan benda jatuh di belakang retina.
Miopi : rabun dekat, bayangan benda jatuh di depan retina.
Astigmatisme : kesalahan reflaksi yang terjadi karena berkas – berkas cahaya jatuh pada garis di atas retina.
Presbiopi : cacat mata tua, disebabkan karena kesalahan akomodasi karena daya lenting berkurang, sehingga tidak dapat memfokuskan bayangan sebuah benda yang berada dekat dengan mata.
Juling : ketidak serasian bola mata pada saat berrgerak yang diakibatkan adanya paralisa pada beberapa otot.

Keajaiban Dunia Great Barrier Reef/Karang Penghalang Besar

Great Barrier Reef adalah kumpulan terumbu karang terbesar dunia yang terdiri dari kurang lebih 3.000 karang dan 900 pulau, yang membentang sepanjang 2.600 km. Karang ini berlokasi di Laut Koral, lepas pantai Queensland di timur laut Australia. Sebagian besar wilayah karang ini termasuk bagian yang dilindungi oleh Taman Laut Karang Penghalang Besar (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park).

Karang Penghalang Besar (KPB) dapat dilihat dari luar angkasa dan kadang disebut sebagai organisme tunggal terbesar di dunia.
